What Does the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Offer?

With a strong engine and lots of standard tech and safety features, the Toyota Highlander is still a strong choice in a highly competitive midsize crossover segment. The 2021 model year is available in L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum trim levels.

Performance

Remarkable acceleration ability on the 2021 Toyota Highlander is made possible by a 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission attached to it for smooth shifts. With start-stop technology to eliminate engine idling and a front-wheel-drive layout, the Highlander has a peak EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

There's the option of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system to optimize traction on slippery surfaces, and it comes with a a traction management system-with Mud/Sand, Rock/Dirt, and Normal modes-to adjust driving performance to the type of terrain you come across.

Interior Space

The 2021 Toyota Highlander provides three rows of fabric-trimmed seats to seat up to eight people. However, the second row on the XSE, Limited, and Platinum get a pair of captain's chairs instead of a bench-style seat to reduce maximum capacity to seven. Standard cargo space is measured at 16 cubic feet, with the option to extend it to 48.4 cubic feet by folding down the third row and max it at 84.3 cubic by folding down the second and third rows.

The front includes an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. For the front-seat, you can expect heating, synthetic leather seat trim, an upgraded to 10-way driver-side power adjustability, and 4-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat, with the XLE trim level. The Limited trim gains leather seat trim and steering-wheel heating, and enhancements such as second-row heating and a panoramic moonroof are exclusive to the Platinum.

Interior Features

For infotainment, the 2021 Toyota Highlander comes with the Entune multimedia system, which is anchored with an 8-inch touchscreen and brings together several components, which include:

  • Six-speaker AM/FM stereo system
  • Five USB ports (one for media and four for charging)
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Three months of SiriusXM Radio
  • Amazon Alexa compatibility
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration

With its tri-zone automatic climate control system, the Highlander has separate controls for the driver, front-seat passenger, and second-row occupants. At the XLE trim level, you get a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display (in place of the 4.2-inch), wireless phone charging ability, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a garage-door opener, and a navigation system. The Limited gains a 11-speaker JBL premium audio system in place of the six-speaker setup. Only the Platinum comes with the following:

  • Digital rearview mirror (in place of the physical one)
  • Driver Easy Speak (for amplifying the driver's voice to rear-seat passengers)
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen
  • 10-inch head-up display

With the Highlander, you get the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite, which provides the following driver-assistance technologies:

  • Automatic high beams
  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Lane departure alert
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Traffic sign recognition

Also present is a rearview camera for monitoring what's behind you when moving in reverse. However, if a crash occurs, the Highlander can deploy any of the eight airbags-consisting of two knee airbags (for the driver and front passenger), two frontal impact airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags-installed throughout the cabin. If you go with the AWD system, Toyota adds downhill assist control for a controlled descent.

At the XSE trim level, Toyota adds front and rear parking to enhance the rearview camera's functionality. The Platinum trim gets a rear camera mirror for enhanced rearview monitoring, as well as a surround-view camera that replaces the rearview one for a 360-degree viewing perspective.
