2020 Toyota Corolla vs. 2019 Chevrolet Cruze

Boasting a full redesign for the 2020 model year, the Toyota Corolla delivers everything one expects from an outstanding compact car, including comfortable accommodations, excellent fuel efficiency, and a wealth of standard and available features. The Corolla's exterior makeover also gives it an aggressively stylish aesthetic that's not typical for its segment. Of course, the Corolla is more than good looks. On the inside, it provides sophisticated style elements, intuitively arranged controls, and roomy and inviting passenger accommodations.

Since its initial launch more than 50 years ago, the Corolla has since assumed the mantle as the world's best-selling vehicle nameplate and for good reason. So, it's only natural that such a successful model would draw comparisons to many competitors such as the Chevy Cruze. While relatively new to the industry, the Chevy Cruze makes a compelling case for itself, with sporty handling and numerous features. However, when compared head-to-head with the Corolla, its shortcomings quickly become apparent.

Toyota Corolla vs. Chevy Cruze: Safety Features

Toyota demonstrates its commitment to automotive safety by equipping the Corolla with advanced driver-assistance technologies on all trim levels. Standard driver aids include:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection (forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking)
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Road Edge Detection with Sway Warning
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist

The Chevy Cruze offers some advanced driver aids, notable forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist, but they're only available on the upper tiers and aren't standard on any trim level. Drivers seeking adaptive cruise control will be out of luck, as it isn't available for the Cruze at all.

Toyota Corolla vs. Chevy Cruze: Engine Options

Corolla SE and XLE models feature a standard 169-horsepower 2.0-liter engine and a specialized continuously variable automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Cruze's 1.4-liter engine falls behind at 153 horsepower and features a regular six-speed automatic transmission. The Cruze also offers a diesel option, but it's much more expensive and makes just 137 horsepower.

Toyota Corolla vs. Chevy Cruze: Value and Warranty

The Chevy Cruze's L trim level is only available via special order, making the LE trim its effective base model. Despite similar MSRPs across the trim levels, the Toyota Corolla offers much more value than the Chevy Cruze. The Corolla includes more standard features, including a suite of advanced driver aids, LED headlights, and Toyota Safety Connect emergency communications, for nearly the same cost as the Cruze.

Additionally, when comparing five-year ownership costs, expect to spend $4,500 more on the Cruze than the Corolla. The Corolla also holds its value for longer, retaining nearly $3,000 more of its value over five years than the Cruze.

The Corolla and Cruze have identical basic warranties. However, Toyota covers regular maintenance on the Corolla for two years or 25,000 miles, including oil changes, lubrication, and other standard service items. Chevy only covers the first scheduled maintenance visit.

Finally, while the Corolla continues to enjoy its position as an industry mainstay, Chevrolet announced that 2019 would be the Cruze's last year.
