2020 Toyota Corolla vs. 2020 Honda Civic

Fully redesigned for the 2020 model year, the all-new 12th-generation Toyota Corolla is everything a good compact car should be: efficient, comfortable, and loaded with features across all trim levels. Brimming with personality, the Corolla also sports head-turning aesthetics uncommon for the class. On the outside, one can't help but notice the aggressively narrowed headlights of the dynamic front fascia, or its athletic stance and aerodynamic profile. On the inside, the 2020 Corolla is attractive and inviting, with sophisticated style and high-quality materials throughout.

As one of the industry's most popular nameplates, the Corolla naturally draws many comparisons, particularly to long-time competitor and industry mainstay, the Honda Civic. While the 2020 Civic extends its tenth generation introduced four years ago, it remains a very worthy competitor. This rivalry has been close for many years; however, the new Corolla generation gains the edge in many attributes when matched head to head with the Civic.

2020 Toyota Corolla vs. 2020 Honda Civic: Safety Features

The Corolla and Civic were both built with safety as a primary concern. As such, the two models come standard with several advanced driver-assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. However, the Toyota Safety Sense package includes extra features not offered by the Honda Sensing suite, including Lane Tracing Assist, Road Edge Detection with Sway Warning, Hill Start Assist Control, and Road Sign Assist.

Additionally, while critics praise the smooth braking and acceleration of the Corollas adaptive cruise control1, the same feature on the civic was derided for its slow response time.2 Furthermore, the Corolla offers Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert technologies as available upgrades, features that are conspicuously missing across the Civic's lineup.

Finally, the Corolla comes standard with Toyota Safety Connect emergency services. HondaLink is only available as an optional upgrade.

2020 Toyota Corolla vs. 2020 Honda Civic: Interior and Technology

The Toyota Corolla comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and with support for Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Civic's standard screen is a regular 5-inch display. To get a larger touchscreen and smartphone integration on the Civic, you have to upgrade to at least the Sport trim level. Amazon Alexa and a Wi-Fi hotspot aren't even options on the Civic. Additionally, the Corolla offers the ability to upgrade to a larger eight-inch touchscreen while the Civic does not.

When it comes to passenger comfort, riders in the back seat will likely prefer the Corolla, as it provides four inches more legroom than the Civic.

2020 Toyota Corolla vs. 2020 Honda Civic: Value

While the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic carry nearly equal initial MSRP's, the Corolla offers more features as standard equipment, including infotainment features and extra driver aids. Additionally, Edmunds.com reports that the Corolla costs $1,500 less than the Civic when comparing five-year ownership costs. The Corolla also holds its value for longer than the Civic, with an estimated depreciation of $1,661 less than the Civic over a five-year period.
